Submissions

Editorial Policy

Let’s get the important part out of the way first. We are unable to pay creators for any work we showcase. Sorry, but as is the way with almost all small press titles, if you were to factor in all the costs, we all operate at a loss. Any profit that is made will be used to fund future book collections. If at such time in the future that we become an overnight success story, this policy will be revised accordingly. In the meantime, we will do our utmost to promote the creators we work with, and hopefully help to bring them to the attention of paying publications.

Work submitted remains the copyright of the original creators, with The Girly Comic having first electronic publication rights and the right to reprint the strip in any future book collections of the comic.

The Girly Comic aims to be suitable for teenagers upwards, and does not intend to carry a mature readers warning. Therefore submissions should not contain scenes unsuitable for that age range. This does not mean that swearing, sex and violence are banned as they are a part of life that people see every day. Just be aware that if your submission involves them, then it should be because they are essential to the story and are dealt with in a sensitive, rather than gratuitous way.

Submissions on any topic or from any genre are welcomed, as the comic aims to have a diverse range of stories. However, all stories must have a female main character or some aspect that fits into a ‘girly’ theme. We’re eclectic, but feel that there should be some linking motif behind it all.

We are looking for original work, so please do not submit any strips involving characters that are the copyright of another creator or company. Also please do not submit work that has already been used elsewhere.

Strips should be self-contained stories and a maximum of seven pages. Please do not assume that because we will accept longer stories that all stories should be that length. Some stories are better told with brevity! Plus, when we are unable to pay our contributors, it is much easier to find an artist for a shorter work.

Please do not submit ongoing sagas. We receive many queries from aspiring creators who would like us to publish their graphic novels. We are sorry, but if we had the time or capital to do so, we would be publishing our own magnum opii!

Writers:

We are currently accepting submissions. If you would like to submit, then please email Selina Lock with a written script or to discuss your ideas.

If you are unfamiliar with the comic script format you can find examples on the 2000AD site.

Artists:

We are currently accepting submissions. If you would like to submit then please email Selina Lock with samples of your work, or a website where your work can be found. If you have samples of sequential comic pages as well as single illustrations, that will give us a better idea as to your suitability. We will then let you know if we like your work and discuss what strips we have that are awaiting an artist.

We are planning both web and print editions of comics we showcase. For the web, we can have unrestricted use of colour, but the books will need to be monochrome, in order to allow us to keep the retail price down. So, while we welcome colour strips, if you go down that road, please make sure that the art is suitable to be greyscaled for print, or let us have a black and white version for print.

We will need two sets of images:

1) Colour, toned or black and white, jpgs at A5 format (7.8″ x 5.5″) at 72dpi. These will be used for the webcomic.

2) Black and white, or greyscale, jpgs at A5 format (7.8″ x 5.5″), and at least 300dpi for the print collections.

Writer/Artists:

We are currently accepting submissions. Please email Selina Lock with a synopsis or full written submission, and samples of your artwork, so we can discuss whether we think the strip would be suitable.
